 Pat Cochranehas been involved in the martial arts since 1988 and received his black belt in 1993. Since that time he has been active in his training while instructing both adults and children. He has participated in all levels of tournament kumite and kata, and has been an active director in the Kenpo Association of Newfoundland and Labrador since 1992. Pat is also the owner and Head Instructor of the Mt. Pearl School of Martial Arts.

Roger Miller became involved in Kenpo in 1985 at the age of 9 and received his black belt in 1992. Most of Roger's training was under the instruction of Sensei Garry Temple in the Marystown Kenpo club and Jacques Fontaine Kenpo club, which was founded by Roger and Gary. Roger has been active as an instructor for 14 years and is one of the senior instructors at the Mt. Pearl School of Martial Arts. Roger is currently the President of the Kenpo Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Danny Tobin began his martial arts training in 1984 and received his black belt in 1994. Danny has many  years experience in teaching both children and adults, having trained in a number of schools, including his own school, which he operated for almost 2 years. Danny became involved with the Mt. Pearl School of Martial Arts in 1997 and is one of our most senior instructors.

Mike Lush has been an active Kenpo practitioner  for 39 years. He began training in 1972 at the MUN Kenpo club, received his black belt in 1985 and since that time has trained under a number of instructors and has competed and placed in many levels of provincial and national competition. Currently Mike is the Secretary / Treasurer of the Kenpo Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Mike King initially began training in 1972 with Sensei Dave Jackman and later received his Black Belt when training with Sensei Mike Foley in 1992. At the age of 72 "Iron Mike" is a dynamic touchstone to the earlier days of Kenpo in Newfoundland and Labrador and he is still a daunting and awe-inspiring, training partner for everyone, including his grandson Michael who also trains at MPSMA.

Harry Bishop  joined the Mount School of Marital Arts in September 1996 as a White Belt and enjoys the distinction of being the first student to be awarded a Black Belt by the School after having trained there from White Belt status.  He was 47 years old when he joined and was awarded his Black Belt in June 2003.  Since that time he has been active as an Instructor and really enjoys all aspect of martial arts training.  Sensei Harry credits his involvement in the martial arts with improving his overall lifestyle.  He enjoys regular exercise,Tai Chi and Yoga and has interests as well in music and art.  As a grandfather he looks forward to sharing his interest in martial arts and other activities with his grandson Benjamin.

 Liam Whelan is  25 years old . He started training at MPSMA in 1996 at the age of nine and attained his Kenpo black belt in April of 2005.  He has developed a great deal of maturity and confidence from his long association with the school. He has since broadened his martial arts horizons to embrace amateur kickboxing and Gracie Jiu Jitsu where he has acheived  his blue belt under the Pedro Sauer system.  He derives great satisfaction from passing his Jiu Jitsu knowledge on to the MPSMA students. Liam is at present attending Memorial University where his major is Chemistry.

 Gerry Whelan is 56 years old. He joined the MPSMA in 1999 because martial arts was an activity he could share with his son Liam. Gerry received his black belt in March of 2004. Gerry  assists in teaching the children's and adult classes. Gerry competed at the provincial and national level in amateur wrestling while attending Memorial University from 1977 to 1983 and coached briefly at the High school level. He works as a geological data management specialist with an international oilfield service company and credits the MPSMA family with such major health benefits as stress reduction, improved fitness  and wonderful friends.

Glenn  Delaney is a 43 year old Group Home professional who has been training with the MPSMA for 10 years. Glenn attained his Black Belt in 2006 and is very active as an instructor. He  enjoys sports of any kind

Craig Heath  is 49 years old. He joined the MPSMA in 2002 after spending a full year watching his daughter Brianna train and thought it would be an activity they could share together. Craig (a.k.a. Grasshopper) received his black belt in June of 2009 and  now enjoys assisting in teaching the children's classes. After a brief absence Brianna is back training and now in the adult class where Craig looks forward to eventually tying her Black Belt around her waist. He works as a Senior Commercial Account Manager with Cal LeGrow Insurance Limited for 20+ years. Craig loves his Montreal Canadiens and the friendly banter it creates  in the Dojo.

 Adam Mercer is 24 years old. He attained his  Black Belt in 2005 after 12 years of training with a number of different Kenpo clubs but predominantly the MPSMA. Adam is also actively involved with CASK ( past champion) and, with his brother Andrew, also provides Kick boxing coaching to our students at MPSMA.

Andrew Mercer is 25 Years old. He attained his Black Belt in 2005 after 11 Years of training, predominantly with the MPSMA. He is a phenomenal athlete who also makes his living as a personal trainer. Andrew will train wherever and wherever he can. Andrew is currently the Canadian champion for his weight class in Canadian Amateur Sport Kickboxing ( CASK) and is a very valuable coaching resource to MPSMA .

Andrew Blundon started training at the age of 8 under Sensei Mike Foley Sr. when Sensei Mike opened a Kenpo Karate Dojo in Foxtrap, Conception Bay South in 1984.  In the late 1980's and early 1990's Andrew started training with Sensei Jake Rideout when Sensei Jake became the head instructor of the CBS Dojo.  During this time Andrew was an active assistant instructor, especially for the junior class where Andrew was responsible for the instruction of one class per week for a number of months as a requirement for advancement. In June of 1992, Andrew was awarded the rank of Black Belt from Mike Foley Sr. at his Mount Pearl Dojo.  Andrew continued training with Sensei Jake and acting as an assistant instructor through the late 1990's. After taking a few years off to complete his engineering studies and start a family Andrew joined MPSMA in 2008 where he continues to train.  Andrew lives in Paradise with his wife and three children (3 boys).  He works as a Senior Structural Engineering in St. John's and volunteers with many organizations (Pathway Community Church, Scouts Canada, Thyroid Foundation of Canada and the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador).

Rebecca Reid is seventeen years old. She began her training at the age of eight, and finally received her Black Belt in June 2010. She enjoys helping with the younger classes and teaching when she gets the chance. Rebecca is also involved with voice, and actively participates in the Kiwanis Music Festival and has attained her Grade 7 in the Royal Conservatory. She is currently a level 3 student at O’Donel High School and hopes to go to MUN in the fall.

Boyd Coffin began his martial arts training in 1986 and recieved his black belt in 1994. Boyd has been teaching and training at the Mt Pearl School of Martial Arts for nine years now and enjoys passing on his experience and training to our students, who number now include his son Alex who recently attained his yellow belt.

Andrew Young  has been active in Martial Arts since 1992 and recieved his black belt in January of 2000. He holds the distinction as the first Black Belt awarded by the Mount Pearl School of Martial Arts. He has also trained at the C.B.S. Kenpo club with Jake Rideout where he achieved the level of Brown Belt. Andrew is proud to be part of the MPSMA and enjoys teaching in both the children and adult classes.

Andrew lives in Portugal Cove with his wife and 2 beautiful daughters. He works as a professional engineer in St. John's.

Jason Dillon  began training at MPSMA in 2003 as the result of the encouragement of his wife Nancy and achieved his Black belt in June 2008. Jason had previously trained for 2 years in Tai Kwon Do. Jason is an electrical technician who enjoys ice hockey and dirt biking.

Nancy Dillon has been involved with the Mount Pearl School of Martial Arts since 1996 and received her black belt in March of 2004. Nancy finds purpose in sharing her martial arts skills to encourage the widest range of women to train in the spirit of building individual and collective strength.

Darrell Efford   started training with MPSMA in 1998  and achieved his black belt in 2006. He also a student of Muay Thai.

Darrell is a night manager at a Club and is training to become an RCMP officer. He is an accomplished  amateur photographer and includes dog training as a  major hobby .

Mike Rickert is a Departmental Program Co Ordinator with the Provincial Government. After playing organized hockey for 15 years, he joined the MPSMA program in September 2000 and attained his black belt in June 2008. Mike enjoys the training offered by the MPSMA program and thoroughly enjoys helping and watching the students work hard to advance and achieve their goals. The friendship throughout the MPSMA is, in his opinion, second to none....

Dennis Rose began his martial arts training with the MPSMA in 2002 and received his black belt in June 2008. Dennis is the manager of a manufacturing and retail business who also enjoys travel, wine making as well as cycling and cross country skiing in season.

Steve Mallard   began his martial arts training in 2001 and received his Black Belt in June 2008. Steve is a teacher at District School and enjoys the daily challenges of working with students who have behavioral issues. Steve is originally from Fortune but now resides in Paradise with his wife Cheryl and three daughters. Steve has always been very active in sports. In addition to Karate he enjoys hiking, fishing, camping, travelling and hanging out at his cottage in Western Bay. One of Steve’s proudest Karate accomplishments is the relationship he established with fellow Black Belt Dennis Rose. Dennis and Steve started Karate on the same night and received their Black Belts on the same night. During this journey they were always partners and always willing to work as hard as possible.

Michelle (Shelly) Melee  has been a member of MPSMA since 2001. Unfortunately after her orange belt she injured herself while hiking and was three years rehabilitating her knee. Since returning to the Kenpo family she uses her former gymnastics coaching skills to aid in the instruction of the children's classes, which she thoroughly enjoys. Shelly was awarded her Black Belt. on May 11th, 2011

Mark Efford is currently a student atMemorial University. He joined the MPSMA in January 2000 and received his yellow belt in June 2000. Mark moved to the adult class at the age of 13 and received his brown belt at the age of 14. After a 2 year delay Mark returned to the MPSMA in 2008. Mark  was awarded his Black Belt. on May 11th, 2011
